| Robots invade the cinema |
Introduction
We know very well that human imagination and aspirations have no limits, and this is what was clearly shown in the science fiction writings that appeared throughout the ages and had the greatest impact on the scientific progress that man reached as a result of man's attempt to transform science fiction into a scientific reality, and this is what we see in the technological progress that man has achieved in fields such as industry in its various forms, as well as space and attempts to discover the universe, and also the field of communications, which witnessed a great qualitative leap.
The field of filmmaking had a large share of this progress, as cinema was also influenced by science fiction writings, as films about science fiction appeared, such as Star Wars and ET, and others, which achieved huge profits as a result of the audience's interest in them.
*Robots and their impact on cinema
It is worth noting that robots are the product of science fiction, as science fiction writings about robots opened great horizons for inventors to invent the robots that we see now in reality.
We find that what has become popular about robots in scientific circles and in science fiction writings has prompted those in charge of the cinematic field to exploit robots as subjects for films with large budgets. These films have achieved unparalleled success in viewing and the appetite of viewers has not stopped requesting more of such types of films. These films have also achieved huge profits for producers. *In these films, we find that robots are not a secondary element in the events that take place in these films, but they are the main subject and perhaps the main heroes in cinematic stories that predict that they will soon be a danger to humans and will outsmart their creators and rule their creators. These robots will be able to develop their capabilities and emotions to become owners of human feelings. *With the continued questioning of the tasks that these robots will perform in the future and other questions that are still being exploded by an unending series of robot films, we will not be able to review all of these films, but we will suffice with showing some of them.
"Transformers" movie
This movie and its other parts are still standing on the list of movies topping the box office in the United States and the world. It was directed by Michael Bay and starred Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox. It was produced by the famous director Spielberg, who came up with the idea for the movie when he saw a Japanese children's game called "Transformers"
in which cars turn into robots and vice versa. Spielberg did not hesitate to present this idea to director Michael Bay, asking him to make a movie about these transforming robots. Indeed, the Transformers movie was made, which achieved indescribable success. The movie was opened at the Sicily Festival in Italy. When this movie was shown in the United States of America, it earned $20 million during the first week of its showing, then the number rose to $130 million, then this number doubled when this movie was shown globally. This movie is about a teenager whose father buys him a car and the surprise is when he discovers that the car is nothing but an evil robot trying to harm him. This robot is one of similar robots that came from a distant planet and took the form of ground cars and turned into robots when they start attacking humans. These transformed robots succeed in destroying an American base in Qatar. Then we find that they are an evil race and another good race. All these robots fight among themselves to obtain glasses owned by the teenager that grant absolute power to whoever owns them. This movie was brilliantly executed and gave a strong impression to the audience that we are not the only ones in the universe and that there are distant worlds inhabited by intelligent robots. This movie does not answer the question of who made these robots on the distant planet they came from! Did they kill their creators and then develop themselves and head towards killing the inhabitants of Earth, or is this movie as a whole a warning to the inhabitants of Earth that they have begun an era in which robots control life on Earth and begin to destroy them? The movie raised these questions in the minds of the audience and left them wondering how to answer them, and this is one of the reasons that helped make this movie a resounding success.
"I, Robot"
This film was presented by director Alex Probas, who is known as a specialist in strange and science fiction films.
This director employed all his skills that he acquired through his long experience in presenting this film.
We also used the skills of big stars, including Will Smith, Bridget Mobhan, Bruce Greene, MacBride, and others. This film was described by critics as the best science fiction film about robots. And the most successful film in employing sound and visual effects. It was not surprising that this film topped the box office revenues and turned into a controversy in the American and European press, considering it a calm and convincing warning of the near future in which robots will control and kill their human creators.
The events of the film take place in the year 2035, i.e. in a very near future, where the detective in the film, Dale Espons, investigates the reasons for the suicide of a scientist specializing in robotics, Dr. James Cromwell. This scientist committed suicide by throwing himself out of his window into the street, and the file of his suicide was almost closed if it weren’t for a hieroglyphic message that the detective found in the scientist’s apartment, which raised his suspicions that there was a murder hidden behind his suicide. His suspicions increased about a robot made by the scientist called “Sonny,” which is one of an army of robots that became part of the structure of societies at that time, but they are all governed by laws. No human being can doubt that a robot can commit a murder. However, the detective seeks the help of a psychologist who discovers that the robot “Sonny” was made by Dr. Cromwell in a way that makes it superior to other robots and that it possesses human feelings that make it even able to see dreams like humans. From following these dreams by the psychologist and the detective, it became clear that The robot "Sony" has developed itself and killed its creator, but with criminal craftsmanship that made his murder look like a suicide by Dr. James Cromwell. It is worth noting that this film did not reach an end that clarifies the fate of this robot and whether it was tried or not!. But this film carries a warning cry for humans against going too far in development for fear that the consequences will be dire.
"WALL-E"
This movie is directed by the great director Andrew Staton, who won an Oscar.
This movie presents us with a love story that is presented for the first time on the screen. It is a love story between two robots. The events of the film revolve around the year 2700 about a small robot called "WALL-E" who lives alone on planet Earth with no companion except a small plant that grew among the garbage and a small cockroach. As for the human inhabitants of Earth, some of them were wiped out due to nuclear and bacterial wars, while the surviving part was collected in a large spaceship containing all the ways of life after the Earth became unfit for human life due to the devastation and pollution that befell the Earth at that time. Therefore, the robot "WALL-E" appeared alone as he continued his work that he was programmed to do, which is to convert garbage into small cubes and arrange them on top of each other. He has been continuing this work for seven hundred years since humans left Earth and set off in the spaceship into distant space, leaving the devastation and destruction that befell the Earth. But the turning point that would change the state of this robot began when a spaceship landed on Earth and threw another robot, but a female, to explore the changes. Which has happened on Earth since leaving the spaceship that was carrying the surviving humans to distant space.
This strong and intelligent female robot took care of the robot "Woolly" who falls in love with her and gives her the small plant, but she was not programmed to accept it from him. Then the spaceship comes to take her, but Woolly, who is infatuated with her, clings to the ship...
And so we are facing a love story that we have not known before. It is a love between two robots. And although this love is characterized by realism, as it is between artificial beings, not humans, the film makes us melt into the story of this love as if it were real and realistic.
"The Two-Century Man"
This movie was directed by Chris Columbus and starred Robin Williams who played the role of a robot who seeks to become a human being and shows human feelings towards the family that owns him, which worries the family at first, but they quickly accept the matter and decide to keep the robot with his feelings.
Thus, Andrew becomes a friend to every member of the family and shows abilities in serving them that other robots do not have, but he suffers when they issue an order to him to perform a task, as then he feels closer to a slave than a friend. Thus, we are with a robot seeking to transform into a human being in all his details.
The owner of a scientific laboratory where the robot Andrew worked helped him achieve this after the head of the family he was in fired. The laboratory owner provided the robot Andrew with a human face that allows him to show his inner feelings. Then he also provided him with a nervous system and a heart, and so on until he becomes closer to a human than a robot. During all this, the robot Andrew falls in love with a girl from the family he worked for and she reciprocates the same love, but because he is basically a robot, he cannot make mistakes like humans and cannot cry like them. This led to the failure of the love relationship between him and the girl, who always insisted that Andrew must make mistakes to make sure that he has a heart that loves like humans. Finally, we find that this robot Andrew, who lived for two hundred years, struggles to obtain the court's recognition that he is human. In the end, the robot Andrew obtains this recognition, but while he is on his deathbed, declaring that he would rather die as a human than live as a machine.
Summary
*It is clear that there is an invasion of robots in world cinema, and this is confirmed by the fact that robot films occupy the first and advanced positions in terms of viewership, in addition to the fact that these films achieve imaginary profits for their producers and the increasing fame of their directors, actors and technicians who work in them.
*The fact that these films always occupy the first positions in viewership reflects the viewers' unstoppable appetite to follow all new films whose heroes are robots. This is due to the fact that the viewer has a strong desire to follow the developments that occur to robots, which appear clearly from the events of one film to another, which confirms the message being conveyed to the viewer that robots will develop little by little until they become an exact copy of humans in all their dimensions. This is the motive for the viewer's unstoppable appetite to follow robot films until this result is reached, which is not unlikely to be expected by the viewer himself.
*The question here is? Are the cinema's predictions of how robots will develop until they become an exact replica of humans in all their dimensions and details accurate? And are the viewers' expectations of reaching this result accurate? *This is what the scientific bodies interested in manufacturing and developing robots will answer in the coming periods, and we can only wait.
